About Us
Background
Virgin Islanders have long displayed pride in their homes, their schools, their communities. Most of us grew up with the adage from our parents and grandparents that “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” They took great pride in their homes, no matter how humble. The houses were cleaned and even the outside yards were swept. Decorative stones and conch shells were used to beautify around the home. Gardens were the pride and joy, with neighbors competing with who had the best croton, hibiscus, or rose garden. When it was known that anyone, especially family from away, was coming to visit, extra cleaning was done. This care culture spilled over into communities as they too prided themselves on being attractive and clean. Our communities embraced and revered our seniors; grandparents, great aunts and uncles, and older godparents. They were the natural mentors to be found in church, Sunday School, and schools. Additionally, inter-generational interaction was common-place as our grandparents lived with the family. This allowed for daily inter-actions between our elders and the young, a natural passing on of wisdom, history and culture. The ravages of Hurricanes Irma and Maria have impacted the social, and physical structure of the Territory. We had made some significant strides in recovery; however, Tropical Storm Ernesto has impacted our environment once again. Our beautiful green foliage has taken a battering, especially our trees. We need to know and understand that Beauty is by Nature. Clean is by CHOICE! We have the power to make the changes needed to return our Virgin Islands to its former heights. We must remember that the Virgin Islands “Is OUR Place!” and this is a perfect opportunity for us to rebuild our communities. The Roots to Resilience: Together We Thrive Prrogramme has been created to provide opportunities for inter-generational development, beautification, and strengthening of communities.
The Goal
Roots to Resilience: Together We Thrive aims at strengthening our Virgin Islands Community by fostering engagement, promoting education and development, enhancing health and environmental well-being, and supporting financial growth. Our mission is to create a connected, empowered, and resilient community where every member feels valued and has the opportunity to thrive.
For Who
It is for every resident in the Territory. We aim to engage young people, adults and seniors on Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. Everybody!
